DETAILED ITINERARY

Walking in the CARPATHIANS

Day 1: Timisoara

Your holiday starts with your arrival in Timisoara, where we are ready to greet you at the airport on your arrival.

Timisoara is a historical city where the revolution against the former communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu started. There is still evidence of this in the old square in the centre, opposite the square is the magnificent Roman Orthodox Cathedral.

From here we transfer you up to our mountain guesthouse crossing cultivated land and typical Romanian villages, 2 ½ hrs drive.

On arrival you will me met with a warm welcome and shown your room.

Before the evening meal, you can relax looking at the view and our detailed maps.

Start the day with a hearty breakfast and then from our doorstep start the walk towards Slatina Timis over rolling hills and meadows. You will encounter the real spirit of Romania, meeting shepherds and rural life with horses and carts pulling everyday necessities.

As you climb slightly, you will take in beautiful views and mountain ranges in the distance that you will walk another day. walkking approx. 6 hrs.

Day 3: Tarcu to Poiana Marului

After breakfast you are transferred to a drop off point in the mountains - approx. 40 minute drive.

From here you will walk up to the highest mountain in the area," Tarcu "at 2300m, at the top you see the extent of the Carpathian wilderness.

From Tarcu, the trail heads across mountain tops with views for 100km towards a remote village and lake of "Poiana Marului", where you are picked up and off back to our guesthouse with many places of interest to see. walkking approx. 8 hrs.

Day 4: Rest day, to sit and relax or visit places of interest such as the "Danube" or "special rock minerals". (see places of interest page).

Day 5: Baile Herculane and the Cerna Sat Valley

A short drive takes us to" Baile Herculane" and the natural sulphur spring where the Romans built baths that are still in use today.

Around this area and up toward Cerna Sat, are the famous white rock vertical faced mountains with various different walks. Your tour guide will advise on the different walks ,during your walk you will see why the Romans settled here in this majestic secret place. Walking approx. 6 hrs.

Day 6: Poiana Mare and Cozia mountain range

A short trip after breakfast takes us to a different mountain range. A steady climb takes you onto a ridge with a walk continuing across stunning views of mountain ranges on both sides with villages scattered below in the valley.

You will meet friendly shepherds always happy to have a chat and show you how they live in there simple lifestyle.

Romania04 082.jpg (785306 bytes)From the ridge, you head downward to the valley where we pick you up and a short journey home to a nice evening meal and relax on our terrace. walkking approx. 6-7 hrs.

Day 7: Muntele Mic

The last day is often a trip to a ski resort. At the top of the mountain you will walk past the collapsed secret police building, where during communism it was the ears of Romania!

From here the small trail heads downwards across meadows and a single track over hills and through forest. walkking approx. 5 hrs.

Day 8: After breakfast, we return you back to Timisoara and the airport to say our farewells, to leave you with memories of a walkking holiday in a secret paradise.

SUMMARY

This "Itinerary" is only one example of stunning walks over five days. The days and type of walks are entirely up to you, we have in huge area thousands of km of trails and dozens of day walks to choose from in varying length.

Carol, your tour guide is very knowledgeable of the entire area and very good company to walk with. We can also arrange for overnight stays in comfortable mountain guesthouses.

Many of the walks start from our doorstep and others are a short transfer away. This will allow you to see the different mountain areas and wilderness.
